As Mount Washington Alpine Resort receives its second big dump of snow in as many days, a buzz is in the air about spring-time powder. The mountain reported over 30 centimetres of fresh snow in the last 48 hours and the forecast is calling for consistent snowfall throughout the week.
“We haven’t been on track to meet our average annual snowfall by the end of February,” explains resort spokesperson Brent Curtain. “If we’re going to achieve our average of over 10 metres per season, then we’re going to see a ton of snow in the last half of March and April. Right now, it looks like the snow is coming in earnest.”
The mountain opened its popular Outback area on Saturday, March 14th to the delight of expert skiers and boarders. “The Outback offers some of the best inbounds skiing you can find at any BC ski resort,” states Comox Valley based freeskier Alex Hokansen. “I'm stoked to see that it’s opening up!”
With the recent snowfall and a promising forecast, the resort is pleased to announce an extension to the season in April. Mount Washington’s original closing date for winter operations was scheduled for Monday, April 13th. The resort will now open the slopes to skiers and boarders on the following two season-extending weekends: April 18th-19th and April 25th-26th.
“We want to maximize people’s time on the slopes. If the best conditions of the season are going to arrive now, then we want riders to get out and enjoy it,” Curtain adds.
Mount Washington’s extended spring weekends will feature modified operating hours to take advantage of the extended daylight. The resort is also promising some great new events and late season specials to entice skiers and boarders out onto the slopes.
